Moving Checklist

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2 Months/8 Weeks

 

☐    Sort through the contents of closets, drawers, and cabinets to discard any items you don’t want or need.

 

☐    Hold a garage sale, an online sale, or donate unwanted items to charity.  Moving is an opportunity to organize prior to moving to your future home. Remember selling unneeded or unwanted items can help you recoup some of your moving expenses.

 

☐    Donate any unwanted clothing, furniture, pots, dishes, bedding, etc.  Remember these items can be tax deductible.

 

☐    Arrange for a charity to pick up the items you plan to donate. 

 

☐    Toss or donate any items that cannot be donated.  Check with your trash collection service as there may be a limit of how much can be put at the curb each week.

 

☐    Inventory everything of value that you plan to move and determine replacement values for insurance purposes.   Make note of any items that may require special packing.

 

☐    Create a moving binder to keep track of your estimates, receipts, and inventory.

 

☐    Recycle outdated documents.  Shred paper with personal information.

 

☐    If you are moving to a new area, research banks, doctors, and schools.  Prior to packing any boxes, gather all the proper paperwork you need to set up new accounts.
